
Rudolph I of Burgundy (859-25 October 912) was King of Burgundy from 888 to 912, succeeding King Charles the Fat and preceding King Rudolph II of Burgundy.
Biography[]
Rudolph was born in 859, the son of Count Conrad of Auxerre and Waldrada of Worms, and he belonged to the elder House of Welf. He inherited the lay abbey of St. Maurice en Valais from his father, and he was elected king of Burgundy in 888 after the deposition of Charles the Fat. Arnulf of Carinthia contested his claim on all of Lotharingia, and Rudolph decided to abandon Lotharingia in favor of Burgundy. He married Guilla of Provence, and Rudolph remaind king until his death in 912. His son succeeded him as Rudolph II of Burgundy, and the younger Rudolph would become king of Italy.
