Rudolf von Bunau

Rudolf von Bunau (19 August 1890 – 14 January 1962) was a General der Infanterie of Nazi Germany during World War II.

Biography[]

Rudolf von Bunau was born on 19 August 1890 in Stuttgart, Wurttemberg, German Empire. A World War I veteran, he took part in Nazi Germany's invasion of the Sudetenland in 1938 and the invasion of Poland campaign of 1940. Both of his sons were killed in action on the Eastern Front of World War II in 1943 while the elder Bunau was commanding an infantry division against the Soviet Union, fighting during the retreat from Poland, Upper Silesia, and then Austria. After losing to the Red Army in the 1945 Vienna Offensive, he surrendered to the US Army's US 261st Infantry Regiment at the Enns River in Austria, and he was released in April 1947. He died in 1962 in Kirchheim unter Teck in Baden-Wurttemerg, West Germany at the age of 71.
