Royalism is a political ideology that advocates support for an incumbent monarchial regime. Royalism and monarchism are closely related, but while monarchism refers to the support for a monarchial form of government, royalism advocates the support of the current ruler or dynasty. Historically, the term "royalist" was used to describe the Cavaliers during the English Civil War, the White Army during the Russian Civil War, the Chetniks during World War II, the Legitimists in France, the Miguelists in Portugal, the Carlists in Spain, supporters of the Spanish Empire during the South American Wars of Liberation, and supporters of the Italian monarchy during World War II.
