The Royal Jordanian Army is the army of Jordan, founded in 1956 to replace the Arab Legion. The Royal Army fought against Israel in 1948, 1956, 1967, and 1973, and it fought against Syria and the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1970 during Black September. The army received military equipment from the United States due to Jordan's role as a key regional ally in the Middle East, as the Jordanian monarchy was firmly opposed to Salafist terrorism. In 2012, the Royal Army had a strength of 90,000 active personnel and 60,000 reservists.
