The Royal American Regiment, also known as the 60th Regiment of Foot, was an American Loyalist regiment of the British Army that was active from 1756 to 1815. Raised as the 62nd (Royal American) Regiment of Foot during the Seven Years' War, the regiment combined Swiss and German foresters, American colonists, and British volunteers from other regiments, and its battalions were raised in New York City. The regiment fought at the Siege of Louisbourg, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, and the Montreal campaign at the end of the French and Indian War. In 1775, two additional battalions were recruited in England and Hanover and sent to fight in the American Revolutionary War, with two battalions serving in Florida and Georgia. The regiment went on to serve in the Peninsular War during the Napoleonic Wars, and a seventh battalion served in the War of 1812. In 1815, the regiment was renamed to the Duke of York's Own Rifle Corps, and then to the King's Royal Rifle Corps in 1830.
