Rowan (1540-1558) was a French pagan hunter who lived in a rural cottage with her brother Carrick. In 1558, she rescued Sebastian de Poitiers from a boar trap as he rode to Spain to go into exile (following the cancellation of his betrothal to Mary, Queen of Scots), and she also helped Sebastian rescue the wounded Olivia D'Amencourt. She and Sebastian began a brief romance, but they soon discovered that they were now marked for death by the heretic cult which had attempted to kill Olivia. Intent on obliging the heretics' offer, Rowan drugged Sebastian and offered herself to the heretics, who sacrificed her.
