
Ross Shaw Sterling (11 February 1875-25 March 1949) was the Democratic Governor of Texas from 20 January 1931 to 17 January 1933, succeeding Dan Moody and preceding Miriam A. Ferguson.
Biography[]
Ross Shaw Sterling was born in Anahuac, Chambers County, Texas in 1875, and he launched his own merchandising business at the age of 21. In 1911, he and his brother co-founded the Humble Oil Company, the predecessor of ExxonMobil. Sterling became involved in Democratic politics as a member of the Houston Port Commission, Chairman of the Texas Highway Commission, and Governor from 1931 to 1933. He narrowly lost renomination to former Governor Miriam A. Ferguson in 1932, and he died in Fort Worth in 1949.
