Rosa Gallone (1949-1 January 2034) was Prime Minister of Italy from 2027 to 2029, succeeding Ignazio Uberti and preceding Franco Alieri.
Biography[]
Rosa Gallone was born in Terni, Umbria, Italy in 1949, and she was a member of the Italian Communist Party as a youth. She was active in youth organizations for several decades, and she was then elected to the secretariat of the Italian Left party. She was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2009 and became party leader, and she was a perennial candidate for almost two decades, presiding over a party whose importance and strength radically fluctuated over the years. By the 2020s, however, the Italian Left was the largest party in the anti-M5S opposition, as the right-wing had been all but destroyed. In 2027, with Forza Italia and Lega Nord making up less than a third of Parliament and the Italian Left being the largest opposition party, Gallone found herself running against M5S candidate Marcello Ruvolli, as the incumbent M5S Prime Minister Ignazio Uberti was term-limited. In a landslide election, Gallone defeated Ruvolli 62.1% to 37.9% to become the next Prime Minister.
Premiership[]
During Gallone's premiership, he focused on progressive reforms such as passing a mandatory vaccination law 10-7. Lega Nord staged protests against Gallone's premiership, and it failed in its efforts to abolish the coffee tax. However, despite M5S opposition, the government and the other parties voted 12-9 to abolish highway tolls. The Chamber then voted 15-7 to approve a food control agency, 13-9 to approve national holidays, and voted 12-10 against implementing highway tolls. In January 2028, an immigration crisis began, angering the Italian populace. In early 2028, M5S won 40.93% of the vote and 10 seats, SI won 17.41% and 4 seats, FI won 14.95% and 4 seats, LN won 16.01% and 4 seats, and PD won 10.69% and 2 seats. Despite M5S winning the largest number of seats and the Italian Left making up a mere sixth of the Chamber of Deputies, Gallone was re-elected with 57% of the vote to Ruvolli's 43%. In mid-2028, the Chamber passed an immigration ban by a narrow margin of 10-9, with just 3 abstentions. In mid-2029, M5S gained 40.71% of the vote and 10 seats, LN won 18.21% and 4 seats, SI won 15.78% and 4 seats, FI won 13.87% and 3 seats, and PD won 11.84% and 3 seats. Gallone did not qualify for the prime ministerial election, and Franco Alieri was elected to succeed her as Prime Minister. She remained in Parliament until her death on 1 January 2034, and Vittorio Magalieri took her seat in the Chamber, while Luigi Galeante became the new party leader.
