Romulo Diaz de la Vega (23 May 1800 – 3 October 1877) was President of Mexico from 12 September to 3 October 1855, succeeding Martin Carrera and preceding Juan Alvarez.
Biography[]
Born in Mexico City, Diaz fought as a Lieutenant in the Texan War of Independence in 1836, the 1838 Pastry War with the France, and the 1846 Mexican-American War. On 9 May 1846, having fought in the Battle of Palo Alto, he was taken prisoner after the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. He was released after the end of the war and became the Military Governor of Puebla in 1849 and Tamaulipas in 1850. In 1853 he was elected as Governor of the Yucatan Peninsula.
When Martin Carrera left the Presidency two years later, Diaz assumed the presidency during the interregnum, waiting for somebody to be sent to the capital to take his place. His rule lasted 22 days, and after his presidency he was a member of the Conservatives. After the Mexican Civil War of 1855 he joined with the men who backed Maximiliano in becoming Emperor, and after the end of the Franco-Mexican War he was imprisoned in Puebla, where he died.
