Rohingya

The Rohingya are an Indian ethnic group native to Rakhine State on the Bangladeshi border with Burma. The majority-Muslim Rohingya were native to western Burma, being influenced by the Arabs, the Mughal Empire, and Portugal. During the 20th century, the Burmese government persecuted the Rohingya ethnic group, ceasing to use the name "Rohingya" due to its insistence that the Rohingya were illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. In 1982, the Rohingya were denied Burmese citizenship by a new nationality law, and they suffered military crackdowns in 1978, 1991-1992, 2012, 2015, and 2016-2017. In 2017, the Burmese government waged genocide against the Rohingya, killing over 2,000 and driving 400,000 Rohingya across the border into Bangladesh.
