Rohan

Rohan was, in Norse mythology, a human kingdom in western Middle Earth, with Edoras serving as its capital. Rohan was founded by Eorl the Young in TA 2510 (4554 BC) after obtaining independence from Gondor (whose steward Cirion granted the land to Eorl in recognition of his services against the Easterlings), and its people were called the Rohirrim, or "the Horse-Lords"; its people called their kingdom the Riddermark. The kingdom stretched from the fords of the River Isen in the west to the shores of the River Anduin in the east, and the kingdom was full of grasslands used for horse-breeding. Much of Rohan's history aligns with that of the actual Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia, with Anglo-Saxon tradition, poetry, and linguistics shaping how Norse-Saxon mythology portrayed Rohan in its legands. Rohan and Gondor were staunch allies throughout their history, and, during the War of the Ring, Rohan's cavalry played a key role in the decisive Battle of Helm's Deep and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Eomer Eadig led Rohan to great prosperity following the War of the Ring, and Eomer died in FO 63 (3980 BC). After the continental divide, Rohan was said to have geographically aligned with Germany, with Mirkwood becoming the Black Forest.
