Rocco Chinnici (19 January 1925 – 29 July 1983) was an Italian magistrate from Sicily who was assassinated by the Sicilian Mafia in 1983.
Biography[]
Rocco Chinnici was born in Misilmeri, Sicily, Italy in 1925, and he became a magistrate in Trapani in 1952. He moved to the prosecutors office in Palermo in 1966, and he partnered with fellow magistrates to pool information and share responsibility during their crusade against the Sicilian Mafia, thus preventing any one person from becoming a Mafia target or being responsible for all of the Antimafia Pool's findings. He frequently spoke out against the Mafia in public appearances at a time when judges had avoided the word for many years, and, as a result, mafioso Pino Greco killed Chinnici in a car bombing in Palermo in 1983.
