
Roberto Eduardo Viola (13 October 1924-30 September 1994) was President of Argentina from 29 March to 11 December 1981, succeeding Jorge Rafael Videla and preceding Carlos Alberto Lacoste.
Biography[]
Roberto Eduardo Viola Prevedini was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 13 October 1924 to Italian immigrant parents from Pavia. He became a military officer and assumed the leadership of the Argentine military junta on 29 March 1981, refusing to adopt any populist economic policies. He was ousted by a coup later that year, and, in 1983, he was sentenced to 17 years in prison. He was pardoned in 1990 and died in 1994.
