Robert of Mortain

Robert of Mortain (1031-1095) was Count of Mortain from 1049 to 1095 (succeeding William Warlenc and preceding William) and Earl of Cornwall from 1072 to 1095 (succeeding Brian of Brittany and preceding William).

Biography[]

Robert of Mortain was the son of Herluin de Conteville and Herleva of Falaise, and he was the brother of Odo of Bayeux and the half-brother of William the Conqueror. In 1049, his brother made him Count of Mortain, and Robert fought alongside his brother in the Norman conquest of England in 1066, taking part in the decisive Battle of Hastings. Afterwards, he was granted 797 manors and made Earl of Cornwall, and he slaughtered a force of Danes at Lindsey in 1069. In 1088, he participated in a rebellion against William II of England, but he was pardoned shortly after. He died in 1095.
