
Robert Young Hayne (10 November 1791 – 24 September 1839) was a US Senator from South Carolina (D) from 4 March 1823 to 13 December 1832, succeeding William Smith and preceding John C. Calhoun, and Governor of South Carolina from 13 December 1832 to 11 December 1834, succeeding James Hamilton Jr. and preceding George McDuffie.
Biography[]
Robert Young Hayne was born in St. Paul's Parish, South Carolina in 1791, and he became a lawyer in Charleston in 1812. He served as Quartermaster General of the state militia after serving in the War of 1812, and he served in the State House of Representatives from 1814 to 1818 and as Attorney General from 1818 to 1822. Hayne went on to serve in the US Senate from 1823 to 1832, as Governor from 1832 to 1834, and as Mayor of Charleston from 1836 to 1837, and he was a notable proponent of states' rights. He died in 1839.
