Biography[]

Robert Walter Scott was born in Haw River, North Carolina in 1929, the son of Governor W. Kerr Scott, and he worked as a dairy farmer and was a member of the Grange. An anti-death penalty and pro-education progressive Democrat, Scott served as Lieutenant Governor from 1965 to 1969 and as Governor from 1969 to 1973. He balanced his liberalism with his opposition to violent protests of the Civil Rights movement, anti-Vietnam War movement, and Black Power movement. After leaving office, he served as President of the North Carolina Community College System from 1983 to 1995, and he died in 2009.
