
Robert Guy "the Torch" Torricelli (27 August 1951-) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NJ 9) from 3 January 1983 to 3 January 1997 (succeeding Harold C. Hollenbeck and preceding Steve Rothman) and a US Senator from 3 January 1997 to 3 January 2003 (succeeding Bill Bradley and preceding Frank Lautenberg).
Biography[]
Robert Guy Torricelli was born in Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey in 1951, and he became a lawyer in 1978. He served as an assistant to Governor Brendan Byrne from 1975 to 1977, as an associate counsel to Vice President Walter Mondale in 1978, and in the US House of Representatives from 1983 to 1997, supporting a trade embargo against Cuba. In 1996, he was elected to the US Senate after six donors made illegal contributions to his campaign, and he decided against running for re-election in 2002, with Frank Lautenberg replacing him as the Democratic nominee.
