
Robert Stethem (17 November 1961-15 June 1985) was a Second-class diver of the US Navy Seabees who was killed in the hijacking of TWA Flight 847.
Biography[]
Robert Stethem was born on 17 November 1961 in Waterbury, Connecticut, but he grew up in Virginia Beach and later in Maryland. He joined the US Navy in 1981, and he served with the Seabees, becoming a diver and mechanic. On 14 June 1985, he took TWA Flight 847 out of Nea Makri, Greece after working on assignment there. Hezbollah hijacked the plane during its trip, and he was beaten and tortured when Israel did not release 766 prisoners from Lebanon and Palestine held in their prisons. Mohammed Ali Hammadi murdered Stethem and dumped his body on the tarmac, and he was posthumously promoted.
