Robert Smith was an African-American man who lived among the Wapiti of Oklahoma during the late 19th century. He fell in love with the Native American woman Embraces the Wind and came to join the Wapiti tribe, and they had a son, Charles Smith. After the US Army forced the natives to relocate to a reservation in South Dakota, Smith became a depressed alcoholic, and Charles ran away from home at the age of 13.
