Robert Martin (1833-2 March 1897) was the Republican Governor of the Oklahoma Territory from 8 November 1891 to 18 January 1892, succeeding George Washington Steele and preceding Abraham Jefferson Seay.
Biography[]
Robert Martin was born in Frankfort Springs, Pennsylvania in 1833, and he taught high school in Steubenville, Ohio before becoming a lawyer and serving in the 126th Ohio Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. After the war, Martin moved to Wichita, Kansas and then to Harrison and El Reno, Oklahoma, serving as secretary of the Oklahoma Territory under Governor George Washington Steele. He served as acting governor after Steele's resignation and before Abraham Jefferson Seay was appointed governor, and he died in Guthrie in 1897.
