Robert I "the Old" of Burgundy (1011-21 March 1076) was the Duke of Burgundy from 1032 to 1076, succeeding Henry of Burgundy and preceding Hugh I of Burgundy.
Biography[]
Robert of Burgundy was born in 1011 to King Robert II of France and Constance of Arles, and he was a brother of Henry I of France. Robert and Henry rebelled against their father after the death of their eldest brother Hugh Magnus in 1025, defeating their father and forcing him back to Paris. In 1031, he rebelled against his brother King Henry, and in 1032 peace was agreed when he was given the Duchy of Burgundy as a fief. Robert was little more than a robber baron who plundered the lands of his own vassals as well as the Catholic Church, and his two sons predeceased him, with his oldest son dying in battle. His daughter Constance of Burgundy married King Alfonso VI of Castile in 1079 after his death, making an alliance with the Kingdom of Castile. Robert's death left his nephew Hugh I of Burgundy as the new Duke. Upon the elderly Duke's death in 1076, he was succeeded by his 19 year old grandson Hugh I of Burgundy.
