
Robert Francis Withers Allston (21 April 1801-7 April 1864) was the Democratic Governor of South Carolina from 10 December 1856 to 10 December 1858, succeeding James Hopkins Adams and preceding William Henry Gist.
Biography[]
Robert Francis Withers Allston was born in Waccamaw, South Carolina in 1801, and he graduated from West Point in 1821. He served in the State House from 1829 to 1831, in the State Senate from 1833 to 1856, and as Governor from 1856 to 1858, and, after his state's secession, he served as a Democratic presidential elector within the Confederacy. He died in 1864.
