
Robert Carter Nicholas (10 January 1787 – 24 December 1856) was a US Senator from Louisiana (D) from 13 January 1836 to 3 March 1841, succeeding George A. Waggaman and preceding Alexander Barrow.
Biography[]
Robert Carter Nicholas was born in Hanover, Virginia in 1787, and he joined the US Army in 1808. He fought at the Battle of Chippewa during the War of 1812 as a lieutenant-colonel, and he resigned his commission in 1819. In 1821, he became an Indian agent to the Chickasaw nation, and he later moved to Louisiana and came to own a plantation. From 1836 to 1841, he served in the US Senate, finishing George A. Waggaman's term. He died in Terrebonne Parish in 1856.
