Robert Bertie, 1st Earl of Lindsey

Robert Bertie, 1st Earl of Lindsey (16 December 1582-24 October 1642) was an English nobleman, admiral, and general during the 17th century.

Biography[]

Robert Bertie was born in 1582, the son of Peregrine Bertie, 13th Baron Willoughby de Eresby and the maternal grandson of John de Vere, 16th Earl of Oxford. He served under the Dutch prince Maurice of Nassau during the Dutch Revolt and temporarily commanded English forces at the Siege of Rheinberg in 1601. Bertie was created Earl of Lindsey in 1626, and he formed a regiment of infantry from Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire as disputes between Parliament and King Charles I of England neared civil war. King Charles appointed Lindsey General-in-Chief of the Royalists by the time of the 1642 Battle of Edgehill, and he was shot through the thigh bone in the ensuing battle and killed.
