Robert Archer Cooper (12 June 1874-7 August 1953) was the Democratic Governor of South Carolina from 21 January 1919 to 20 May 1922, succeeding Richard Irvine Manning III and preceding Wilson Godfrey Harvey.
Biography[]
Robert Archer Cooper was born in Waterloo, South Carolina in 1874, and he became a lawyer in Laurens in 1898. He served in the State House from 1901 to 1905, as Governor from 1919 to 1922, and as Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico from 1934 to 1947. He expanded healthcare and improved the state roadways during his tenure, and he died in 1953.
