Robert Ames

Robert Ames (6 March 1934-18 April 1983) was the Central Intelligence Agency's top Middle East analyst. He was killed in the 1983 United States embassy bombing.

Biography[]

Robert Ames was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States on 6 March 1934, and he graduated from La Salle University in 1956 after playing on the basketball team. In 1956, he joined the US Army, and he later switched to the Central Intelligence Agency and specialized in the Middle East. He worked for the Middle East Directorate of Operations, making a high-level penetration of the Palestine Liberation Organization by making contact with Ali Hassan Salameh, leader of the Black September Organization. Ames was killed on 18 April 1983 in the 1983 United States embassy bombing when an Islamic Jihad Organization member detonated a car bomb at the US embassy in Beirut, Lebanon.
