The River Blackwater is a river in Essex, England, rising east of Saffron Walden and meeting the North Sea at Mersea Island. Maldon, located at the mouth of the river, was the site of the famed Battle of Maldon in 991, in which the invading Vikings defeated the town's Anglo-Saxon defenders in a fabled showdown. The Romans once caught fish and oysters in the river, and Saxon fish traps were also found in the river centuries later.
