Ridley Worthington (born 1777) was a Lieutenant-General of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars and a republican leader.
Biography[]
Ridley Worthington was born in Leicester, England in 1777 to an aristocratic family, and he joined the British Army during the French Revolutionary Wars. Worthington served under General Ralph Abercromby in Egypt and also fought in Flanders, and Worthington developed republican views while fighting against the French First Republic. Worthington harbored a deep resentment for the constitutional monarchy of King George III of Britain, ensuring that he was never given command of a field army during the Napoleonic Wars. Instead, Worthington was kept in the reserves, commanding the Oxford garrison.
