Richard Montgomery Young (20 February 1798 – 28 November 1861) was a US Senator from Illinois (D) from 4 March 1837 to 3 March 1843, succeeding William Lee D. Ewing and preceding Sidney Breese.

Biography[]

Richard Montgomery Young was born in Fayette County, Kentucky in 1798, and he became a lawyer in 1816. In 1817, he moved his law practice to Jonesboro, Illinois, and he served in the State House of Representatives from 1820 to 1822 and as a circuit court judge from 1825 to 1837. He was elected to the US Senate in 1837 as a Democratic Party member, serving until 1843. From 1847 to 1849, he served as Commissioner of the General Land Office, and he died in 1861.
