Richard Louis Murphy (6 November 1875-16 July 1936) was a Democratic US Senator from Iowa from 4 March 1933 to 16 July 1936, succeeding Smith W. Brookhart and preceding Guy Gillette.

Biography[]

Richard Louis Murphy was born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1875, and he served as editor of the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald from his father's death in 1902 to 1914, as the state's internal revenue collector from 1913 to 1920, as an income tax counselor from 1920 to 1931, and in the US Senate from 1933 until his death in a car crash near Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin in 1936 at the age of 60. He was a reliable ally of Franklin D. Roosevelt as a fellow New Deal Democrat.
