
Richard Irvine Manning III (15 August 1859-11 September 1931) was the Democratic Governor of South Carolina from 19 January 1915 to 21 January 1919, succeeding Charles Aurelius Smith and preceding Robert Archer Cooper.
Biography[]
Richard Irvine Manning III was born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1859, the grandson of Richard Irvine Manning I. He served in the State House from 1892 to 1896, in the State Senate from 1898 to 1906, and as Governor from 1915 to 1919, and he shepherded through progressive legislation including the prohibition of alcohol, compulsory education, and raising the minimum age of employment to 14. He died at his home in Columbia in 1931.
