Richard II of Normandy

Richard II "the Good" of Normandy (974-28 August 1026) was Duke of Normandy from 20 November 996 to 28 August 1026, succeeding Richard I of Normandy and preceding Richard III of Normandy.

Biography[]

Richard was born in Normandy in 974, the son of Duke Richard I of Normandy. He succeeded his father as Duke in 996, and he allied with Robert II of France against Burgundy and married Judith of Brittany to forge a marriage alliance with Brittany. In 1000-1001, he defeated King Aethelred the Unready of England's assault on the Cotentin Peninsula at Val-de-Saire, and he then had his sister Emma of Normandy marry Aethelred to make peace; this would give his grandson William the Conqueror a claim to the English throne. He was later forced to recognize Emma's new husband Canute as King of England, and he soon began to hire Viking mercenaries for his campaigns. He died in 1026.
