Biography[]

Ricardo Perez Godoy was born in Lima, Peru in 1905, and he graduated from military school in 1924 as a cavalry officer. He rose to be president of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces before seizing power in Lima in 1962 after echoing allegations of election fraud. The coup was condemned throughout the world, despite the Congress intending to install former dictator Manuel A. Odria as President. Perez increased the state's budget through a tax on anchovies, and he was deposed by General Nicolas Lindley Lopez before he could hold new elections.
