Rhun of Galloway

Rhun ab Arthgal (836-878) was King of Strat Clut from 872 to 878, succeeding Arthgal ap Dyfnwal and preceding Eochaid.

Biography[]

Rhun ab Arthgal was born in 836, the son of King Arthgal ap Dyfnwal of Alt Clut. In 870, the kingdom's capital of Dumbarton fell to Ivar the Boneless' Norse Viking army from Sudreyjar, and Rhun and several of his family members were taken as prisoners. Two years later, Arthgal was murdered at the behest of King Constantine of Pictland. Rhun ab Arthgal re-established his family's kingdom up the Clyde River, and it was renamed to "Strat Clut", with Rhun being the first King of Strathclyde. Rhun was forced to endure periods of Pictish or Viking overlordship, and he died in 878, upon which he was succeeded by his son Eochaid.
