Revenge vs. La Rochelle was a naval battle fought between the pirate sloop Revenge and a French Navy convoy off the English island colony of Nevis in May 1640. The English privateer Ossian Trewhella intercepted the French merchantman La Rochelle and its escort Regeneree while they were 8 days out of Montserrat, and the outgunned Trewhella decided to attempt a boarding of the sloop Regeneree before taking on the larger merchantman. However, his men were outnumbered, and he was outfought by the French captain Ymbolet Vaugeois. Trewhella was forced to flee to his merchantman Magdalena, while he lost his sloop Revenge and its 48-man crew. Trewhella sailed off with the 33 crew members of the Magdalena, returning to Nevis to recruit more pirates.
