Reuben Wood

Reuben Wood (1792-1 October 1864) was the Democratic Governor of Ohio from 12 December 1850 to 13 July 1853, succeeding Seabury Ford and preceding William Medill.

Biography[]

Reuben Wood was born in Middletown Springs, Vermont in 1792, and he served in the Canadian Army and the Vermont militia during the War of 1812 before settling in Cleveland, Ohio in 1818. Wood worked as a lawyer before serving in the state Senate from 1825 to 1830 and on the Supreme Court from 1833 to 1847, and, in 1850, he was elected Governor. He resigned in 1853 to serve as the American consul in Valparaiso, Chile until 1855, when he returned to Cleveland. He died at his farm west of Cleveland in 1864.
