The Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) is a Catalan nationalist and social democratic political party in Catalonia, Spain that was founded in 1931. The party gained a large majority of seats in the Catalan parliament once it was created in 1932, and the party took part in a failed 1934 rebellion against the Spanish government after the far-right CEDA party entered the central government. In 1939, the Falangist dictator Francisco Franco outlawed the ERC, but it was legalized after the transition to democracy in the 1970s. In 2017, the party held 9/47 Catalan seats in the Congress of Deputies, 14/23 Catalan seats in the Spanish Senate, 2/54 European Parliament seats, 62/135 Parliament of Catalonia seats, 2,384/9,077 town councillor seats, and 16/925 Balearic Islands town councillor seats.
