The Republican Consulate was the government of the French First Republic at the start of the French Revolutionary Wars, headed by Consul Basil Montesquieu. The consulate assumed power after Nicolas-Joseph Dessalines' coup against the monarchy in 1789, and it led France into a series of wars with Europe's reactionary monarchies during the 1790s.
