The Republic of Georgia is a country located in the Caucasus region of Eastern Europe and western Asia. Georgia was home to the kingdoms of Colchis, Iberia, and the Kingdom of Georgia in ancient history, and it was incorporated into the Russian Empire on 22 December 1800 at the alleged request of Giorgi XII of Georgia. In 1917, Georgia became the Democratic Republic of Georgia after the Russian Revolution, but it would be reconquered by the Russian SFSR, remaining a part of Russia until April 1991. In 1991, the dissolution of the USSR made Georgia an independent country, and its "Rose Revolution" of November 2003 led to Georgia becoming a pro-West country. Georgia had to fight against separatist movements in Abkhazia and South Ossetia during the 1990s and 2000s, and Russia invaded Georgia in 2008 to support the separatists. In 2016, Georgia's capital was at Tbilisi, and the nation had a population of 3,720,400 people.
