Remy Dumoncel (28 October 1888-15 March 1945) was a French Roma politician who served as Mayor of Avon from 1935 to 1940.
Biography[]
Remy Dumoncel was born in Romorantin, France in 1888 to a Catholic Roma family, and he served in the French Army during World War I, being wounded five times. He worked for the Tallandier publishing house in Paris both before and after the war, and he served as Mayor of Avon from 1935 to 1944. During World War II, he used his office as mayor to provide Jews with safehouses or to give them false papers so that they could flee to Vichy France. On 4 May 1944, he was arrested by the Gestapo as he returned to Avon from a business trip to Paris, and he died in the Neuengamme concentration camp in 1945.
