Redouane Lakdim

Redouane Lakdim (1992-23 March 2018) was a French-Moroccan petty criminal and Islamic State sympathizer who killed 3 French civilians after taking them hostage in Trebes, France on 23 March 2018. He was killed when the GIGN stormed the store.

Biography[]

Redouane Lakdim was born in Morocco, and his family later settled in Carcassonne, France. He was twice convicted for petty crimes, serving a month in prison in 2016. Lakdim later became an Islamist, and he became a supporter of the Islamic State. On 23 March 2018, he killed a motorist and stole his car in Carcassonne, and he attempted a drive-by and a hit-and-run against jogging policemen as he drove from Carcassonne to Trebes. He later entered the Trebes Super U supermarket with a handgun, a grenade, and a knife, shooting two dead and taking hostages. He demanded the release of Salah Abdeslam and pledged to die for Syria, and he later allowed for gendarme lieutenant-colonel Arnaud Beltrame to take the place of one of the hostages. Beltrame turned on his phone and placed it on a table inside of the supermarket so that the policemen surrounding the store could listen in. At some point, he fatally shot Beltrame, leading to six GIGN operatives storming the building and killing Lakdim. Beltrame was praised by Interior Minister Gerard Collomb for honoring his country, and flags across the country were lowered to half-mast after Beltrame died of his wounds the day after the attack.
