Ratan Singh was Raja of Ajabgarh during the late 16th century. He was betrothed to marry Princess Harkha Bai of Amber from a young age, but their betrothal was broken off in 1562 when her father Bharmal decided to have her marry the Mughal emperor Akbar instead. A jealous Ratan Singh allied himself with Akbar's ambitious brother-in-law Sharifuddin Hussain (who sought to become Mughal emperor), Harkha's cousin Sujamal (who sought the Amberi throne for himself), and Raja Udai Singh II of Mewar and took part in an armed uprising against Akbar, but Akbar defeated his brother-in-law Sharifuddin in hand-to-hand combat and spared him, averting a battle.
