Ramon de Cardona (1467-10 March 1522) was Viceroy of Sicily from 1507 to 1509, succeeding Juan de Lanuza y Garabito and preceding Hugo of Moncada, and Viceroy of Naples from 1509 to 1522, succeeding Juan de Aragon and preceding Charles de Lannoy.
Biography[]
Ramon de Cardona was born in Urgell, Spain in 1467, and he became an admiral of Spain, owing to his noble family's prominence in Aragon. In 1505, he took part in the capture of Mers-el-Kebir in North Africa, and King Ferdinand II of Aragon appointed him Viceroy of Sicily in 1507. He served until 1509, and he proceeded to serve as Viceroy of Naples from 1509 to 1522. In 1511, he moved to northern Italy to command a large Spanish army during the War of the League of Cambrai, and he was defeated by Gaston de Foix at Ravenna in 1512. He went on to assist the House of Medici by besieging Prato, massacring the population after its fall. In 1513, he defeated the Venetian army of Bartolomeo d'Alviano at La Motta, but he was unable to prevent the Venetians from joining forces with the French at the 1515 Battle of Marignano. He served as Viceroy of Naples until his death in 1522.
