Ram Daraz

Ram Daraz (1665-Summer 1700) was a general of the Mughal Empire. He was a flawed general, and fought in the Deccan Wars against the Maratha Confederacy.

Biography[]

Ram Daraz was born in northern Ahmadnagar in the Mughal Empire, and in the 1680s he fought his first wars against the rising Maratha Confederacy. Daraz was a general by the turn of the century, but like many other Mughal commanders, he was flawed and had poor command skills. In Summer 1700, he tried to retake Ahmadnagar, marching south into the region.

Death[]

Thuggee Gagan Raavi was sent by the Marathas to assassinate him before he could attack the city, and he was assassinated in his camp. Raavi left a dirk buried in Daraz's back before fleeing and letting the Mughal army fall into confusion, forcing them to attack Bombay instead of the heavily-defended and alerted Ahmadnagar.
