Team Rainbow is an elite international counterterrorist unit that was formed in 1999 to combat all terrorism across the world. Although it was subordinate to NATO, it consisted of elite operatives from several countries' special forces, including the United States' Navy SEALs and FBI SWAT; the United Kingdom's SAS; Russia's Spetsnaz; Canada's Joint Task Force 2; Japan's Special Assault Team; Brazil's BOPE; France's GIGN; and Germany's GSG-9 - several of these units also had operatives from other countries, with Israel and Uzbekistan also sending some operatives.
In 2002, the team fought against the Oil Mafia as it attempted to procure nuclear weapons for a war against the West, killing its leaders Samed Vezirzade and Maxim Kutkin. The team also hunted down Croatian Ustase neo-fascists in Argentina in 2005, Russian terrorists in the Caucasus in 2008, Mexican human traffickers in Nevada in 2010, and the White Masks in 2015.
