The Raid on Grenada occurred in 1655 when a Courlander German raiding party led by Nikolaus Schromburgk landed on the English-held island of Grenada and burned the English colony there. The English and Courlanders had previously engaged in naval clashes north of Tobago, and, after the Germans burned down the rival French and Dutch colonies in the region, they proceeded to mount an amphibious assault on English Grenada. The German forces were ferried to Grenada from New Volendam, and they surprised the English colony. The Courlander raiders torched the town center and other buildings, and their artillery pieces helped to blast apart the colony's buildings. The English colony was razed without much resistance, but the English refused to surrender to the Courlanders, and they would rebuild their colony on Grenada shortly after.
