Rafael Carvajal

Rafael Carvajal (15 December 1819-10 August 1878) was President of Ecuador from 31 August to 7 September 1865, succeeding Gabriel Garcia Moreno and preceding Jeronimo Carrion.

Biography[]

Rafael Carvajal was born in Ibarra, Ecuador in 1819, and he worked as a writer and journalist before being exiled by Jose Maria Urvina's dictatorship for his conservative views. He returned in 1856 and befriended Gabriel Garcia Moreno, with whom he carried out an 1859 coup against Francisco Robles. He remained loyal to Garcia during the ensuing civil wars, and he served as Vice President from 1864 to 1867 as well as acting President from August to September 1865. He was exiled after the liberal seizure of power in 1876 and died in Lima in 1878.
