Radovan Karadzic

Radovan Karadzic (born 19 June 1945) was President of the Republika Srpska from 7 April 1992 to 19 July 1996, preceding Biljana Plavsic.

Biography[]

Radovan Karadzic was born in Savnik, Montenegro, Yugoslavia in 1945,  and he was trained as a psychologist. He was the son of a Chetnik fighter during World War II, and Karadzic committed misdeeds of his own, being arrested for fraud in 1984. However, in 1990, he founded the national conservative Serb Democratic Party in SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, serving as President of the Republika Srpska from 1992 to 1996. From 1996 to 2008, he was a fugitive after having been indicted for war crimes committed during the Bosnian War, including genocide. On 21 July 2008, he was arrested in Belgrade and extradited to the Netherlands for trial by the ICTY in The Hague. On 24 March 2016, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison for war crimes.
