The RMS Queen Elizabeth was an ocean liner in service from 1939 to 1972. The ship was built at Clydebank, Scotland and launched on 27 September 1938; she was named for Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, the ship was the largest passenger liner ever built for 56 years. The Queen Elizabeth was utilized as a troopship from March 1940 to October 1946 during World War II before making her first commercial voyage as an ocean liner in October 1946. The Queen Elizabeth 2 replaced the RMS Queen Elizabeth in 1969, and she was retired on 8 December 1968 and was converted into a tourist attraction in Port Everglades, Florida until 1970. The ship was later sold to a Hong Kong businessman who intended to convert her into a floating university, but she capsized during an accidental fire in 1972. Her wreck was partially scrapped from 1974 to 1975.
