The Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) is a conservative-liberal and nationalist political party in Mozambique that was founded in 1975. The party was founded by former senior FRELIMO official Andre Matsangaissa, and it had its roots in several anti-FRELIMO dissident groups. South Africa and Rhodesia supported RENAMO in its 1977-1992 war with FRELIMO during the Mozambican Civil War. Its ranks were bolstered by anti-FRELIMO exiles as well as people who were forcibly conscripted into the resistance organization, and it became a proxy army of Rhodesia and of South Africa's apartheid government. After the end of the civil war in 1992, FRELIMO became a legal political party, serving as the center-right opposition to the left-wing FRELIMO party. In 2017, RENAMO held 89/250 Assembly of the Republic seats.
